After he gathered the proper equipment, Bruce cleared the weeds that blocked the well that he had fallen down as a child, and ventured into the caverns. There, he was swarmed by bats, but that time, Bruce realized that there was nothing to be afraid of. Just on the outskirts of Gotham City, beneath the outlines of skyscrapers in the distance, sits an opulent estate comic book fans know as Wayne Manor. Home of Bruce Wayne, or Batman as a select few call him, the stately mansion is seen again and again throughout 80 years of Batman comics, movies, TV shows, and novels. As an important location in the series that also houses the Batcave, many fans may know the estate hasn’t always looked the same. In the latest episode of Blueprints—a YouTube series for AD—architect Michael Wyetzner breaks down the incredible evolution of Wayne Manor through the years.

Inside The Home Frank Lloyd Wright Designed For His Son

As part of our “Mi Los Angeles” series, we’ve asked Gomez to share her favorite Latino-owned businesses in the city. Glue and brad nail one final board, 18 inches long and 3 inches wide, across the top of both cavities as a roof. Rather than cutting a dedicated piece to size, however, I used some of the cutoff scraps I had, making sure to butt them as tight together as I could.

Bruce left afterwards, donned the Batsuit, and fought Bane. As a result Bruce temporarily set up the Batcave in a hidden bunker beneath a shipping container at Wayne Enterprises' dockyard and used it to fight off the Joker. After he finished the Joker, Batman takes the blame for Harvey Dent's death and Commissioner Gordon named him the prime suspect for the crimes that Harvey committed in order to make Harvey look like a hero.

The Incredible Evolution of Wayne Manor Over 80 Years of Batman

The current members of the Wayne family at the time of Batman Begins were Thomas Wayne, his wife Martha, and their son, Bruce. Alfred was the family's butler, and Rachel Dawes lived on the estate with her mother, the housekeeper. According to some reports that I found online, the mansion was also featured in 1986’s Stand By Me, which seemed a bit odd being that I had always heard that Stand By Me was filmed almost in its entirety in the state of Oregon. After re-watching the flick earlier today, though, I believe that the mansion did appear once at the very end of the movie as the residence of “The Writer” (aka Richard Dreyfuss).

As you can see in the above screen captures, the front driveway area does match that of the Batman  mansion. Why would they come all the way to Pasadena to film this one brief scene, though, when the rest of the movie was filmed hundreds of miles away in Oregon, you ask? Well, according to IMDB’s Stand By Me trivia page, an actor named David Dukes was originally cast in the role of “The Writer”.

Realtor rules just changed dramatically. Here’s what buyers and sellers can expect

Sadly, by the end of Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne’s incredible estate burns down, causing him to live in the penthouse of Wayne Towers when the franchise returned with The Dark Knight. “This is, in fact, the lobby of a Mies Van Der Rohe building in Chicago,” Wyetzner explains, adding that the city views outside of the windows were added via green screen. Though the film is designed to trick viewers into thinking Batman is living high in the sky, Wyetzner shares that a few architectural details clue you in that this isn’t the case.

In Batman's earliest appearances it is said that he operated in New York City. Later it is changed to Gotham City, which is revealed to be located in New Jersey on the Lower New York Bay. A 10-day series of auctions held by Sotheby’s in 1977 sold off most of the estate’s valuables. The owner, Michael Hammer, the grandson of the late industrialist Armand Hammer, was renovating the home, which was unoccupied at the time. San Rafael Avenue, suffered $15-million worth of damage, according to the Pasadena Fire Department.

It served as Wayne Manor—the caped crusader’s HQ—in the 2005 action drama. After Bruce returned as Batman, that prompted Alfred to leave Bruce alone in the Manor in order to try to persuade him to stop being Batman. That same day, Wayne Enterprises went bankrupt, but Bruce was allowed to keep the Manor. That night, Miranda Tate visited Bruce at Wayne Manor, and the two shared an intimate night.

The manor, indicative of Wayne's ancestral wealth, is designed in a Gothic Revival architectural style, matching the Gothic architecture present in Gotham. For live-action films, English country house locations in Nottinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Buckinghamshire, as well as Stevenson Taylor Hall in New York, have been used to depict Wayne Manor. Oddly enough, hanging bat houses on trees doesn’t work well, even though bats often roost directly in trees.

Stately Wayne manor is still standing, despite an erroneous report by Pasadena city officials and neighbors that the sprawling mansion used in the Batman TV series had burned to the ground Wednesday night. Wayne Manor began as the simple home of railroad financier Jerome K. Van Derm in 1855. Soon after, Van Derm had to give up the property to the brothers Solomon and Zebediah Wayne in 1858. Solomon Wayne, a judge, worked hard to preserve equality in Gotham and said that the city should be a "fortress against vice and iniquity". Solomon expanded Wayne Manor to its present size and acted as the first Wayne who turned it into a manor.

To highlight the struggle that accompanies removing oneself from a history of wealth and affluence in order to face the failings of real life, Bruce Wayne had to leave something iconic behind. And in that flick the home’s real life gate does actually appear and was the site of one of the movie’s funniest scenes. The Wayne family has owned the property since the 19th century, but construction was abandoned after Joshua Wayne died.
